Causes

Spirit Of Shankly has began and will continue for one purpose - To represent its members, and fellow Liverpool Fans. As part of this committment to our fans, we support a number of causes.

Michael Shields

Michael Shields is an innocent Liverpool fan currently in jail for a crime that he didn't commit, following an unfair trial that would see any legitimate legal system hang its head in shame. Yet as it is, he is still believed to be guilty by the Bulgarin legal system, and his own country, who despite being told they can free him by Bulgaria, have so far refused to free an innocent young man. As a gesture of support, Michael Shields is Member Number 1 of the Liverpool Supporters Union.

For more on Michael Shields please visit http://www.freemichaelshields.com/ or http://www.michaelshields.uwclub.net/ or http://www.usp.com.au/fpss/case-michael_shields.html. Please visit these sites. There will be announcements soon about how you can help Michael in his campaign for freedom and to clear his name.

Hillsborough Justice Campaign

The Hillsborough Justice Campaign have been very supportive of the Spirit Of Shankly since our beginning.  Offering us use of their facilities, use of the shop for selling tickets and distributing leaflets and for even supplying the leaflets to be distributed. We will be eternally grateful for their initial support. The HJC is close to all our hearts, for their continual fight for Justice following that fateful day in April 1989, and for the support they offer to all fans affected, and to their families. Fans still suffer and the HJC do great work in helping anyone they can, which is why we were pleased to present them with a cheque from the proceeds of our End Of Season Do at The Olympia on 4th May 2008.

For more information on the Hillsborough Justice Campaign please visit  www.contrast.org/hillsborough/.

Anne Williams, Hope for Hillsborough

Anne Williams, was one of 96 parents who lost a child in tragic circumstances on 15th April 1989. To this day Anne is still fighting for Justice for her son Kevin. Anne has exhausted all avenues available in the UK and now has a case pending in Europe. Once again, Spirit Of Shankly was pleased to present Anne with a cheque from the proceeds of our End Of Season Do at The Olympia on 4th May 2008.

Some fans have organised a Fundraising Evening to assist Anne in her fight for Justice. To read more about it, and to see how you can help, please visit  http://www.spiritofshankly.com/news/Hope-For-Hillsborough-Fundraising-Night.html

As a mark of respect for those who lost their lives on 15th April 1989, Membership Number 96 has been left blank.

Ray of Hope Appeal

The Ray of Hope Appeal was started by a number of Liverpool fans, wanting to help an idol - Ray Kennedy. Ray has Parkinsons Disease which has had a dramatic effect on his life. The Appeal has done sterling work and has raised an exceptional amount of money in such a short time for a Liverpool Legend. Spirit Of Shankly was pleased to present the Appeal with a cheque from the proceeds of our End Of Season Do at The Olympia on 4th May 2008.

Bob Paisley Memorial Appeal

Bob Paisley is our most successful manager with a total of 3 European Cups, 6 League Titles, 3 League Cups, 1 UEFA Cup, 1 European Super Cup and 5 Charity Shields. Bob was named Manager Of The Year 6 times.

All this during a managerial career spanning just 8 seasons.

A number of fans, from the Onthekop.com website felt these achievements rightfully deserved to be recognised, and as Bill Shankly has a memorial in his hometown of Glenbuck, then Bob Paisley deserved one as well. So they set about making sure he had one. They have raised the money, met with councils, and planners, and designers, and they have now been given planning permission. This is a great example, of fans getting up off their backsides, and pushing something through.

We were pleased to have Ian Graves, the Chair of the Appeal, speak at one of our Mass Meetings. For more information on the Appeal please visit http://onthekop.com/main/.
