Football Without Fans Is Nothing – NW Supporters Meeting Report

Supporters putting aside club rivalries in favour of united action on ticket prices was the key message that came out of the NW Supporters meeting that took place on Thursday 9th May in The Static Gallery, Liverpool.

Supporters from across the North West, from Liverpool, Everton, Manchester United, Tranmere Rovers and Wigan Athletic were present, listening and debating with representatives of supporter groups. These included Spirit Of Shankly, Manchester United Supporters’ Trust, The Blue Union and Tranmere Rovers Supporters’ Trust as they talked of what is happening at their respective clubs on the issue of ticket prices and how we can campaign.

We were also joined by representatives of the national supporters’ organisations, Supporters Direct and the Football Supporters’ Federation. Kevin Rye from Supporters Direct spoke of their work with the Premier League Supporters Trusts and how a letter had been sent to the Premier League expressing their views on ticket prices. Kevin Miles from the Football Supporters’ Federation spoke of their work and campaign of ‘Twenty’s Plenty’ for away tickets.

The debate was positive and healthy, with those present talking not only of what was wrong and needed fixing, but talking positively of the need to take action as individuals but also as a collective. A number of proposals, as detailed below, were all passed on the night.

  • Joint action by supporters of all clubs at the Premier League Headquarters in London on the 19th June, which marks the day of the 2013/14 fixtures release.
  • Joint action by supporters of all clubs at the Premier League clubs meeting on the 6th June (if the location of the meeting is determined).
  • Joint action by supporters of all clubs targeting Premier League sponsors such as Sky and Barclays. This also included mention of sponsors such as Chevrolet, who sponsor both Liverpool and Manchester United.
  • Bring supporter representatives together to work and act as one, using existing channels such as the Football Supporters’ Federation and Supporters’ Direct where possible.
