SOS Five Years: A note from Karen Gill

Ahead our of five year anniversary event last weekend our patron Karen Gill sent the following note.

Five years ago,in March 2008 I was asked to write a few words for the newly formed supporters’ group Spirit of Shankly. I wrote that it was an honour to have a supporters’ union named after my granddad. It was a sentiment I stood by then and it is a sentiment I continue to stand by. Maybe now more than ever before football supporters need to have a voice and stand united. What was essentially an important part of working class culture has become totally alienated from its roots. We need supporters to be united, organised and we need to reclaim the game.

On a more personal note, I have met some of the best people ever since my involvement with SOS, and of course, I came to know and love Paul Rice, who I’m happy to say I cherish very fond memories of. I’m so glad that great things continue to be done in his name.

Finally, I’d just like to say how proud I am and always will be of my association with The Spirit of Shankly. Wish I could be there with you all.
